Herbert Bolliger

CEO Migros

Award 2018

Swiss Academy of Marketing Science Award

Herbert Bolliger is known as a charismatic leader in the Swiss economy – especially as the former CEO at Migros. He steered Migros through turbulent times when, for example, Aldi and Lidl entered the Swiss market, shopping tourism gained momentum in nearby countries, and the retail sector adjusted to the digital age. The acquisitions of Denner and Digitec Galaxus also took place in the course of these changes.

Herbert Bolliger also left his mark on university education in Switzerland. Shortly before his tenure in 2000, the Gottlieb Duttweiler Chair of International Retail Management was established to strengthen the tradition of retail research at the University of St.Gallen. With this commitment, Migros helped and continues to help the HSG to strengthen its original roots as a university of commerce.

Herbert Bolliger was also personally involved as an active member of the executive committee at the Institute for Marketing at the University of St.Gallen and supports the research center for retail management with advice and action.

Award 2018

Rigour & Relevance Research Award

Presenting innovations in such a way that consumers buy them is essential for the success of many companies. Nevertheless, the market acceptance of many innovations is quite low. In a research paper entitled “Gamified Information Presentation and Consumer Adoption of Product Innovations”, Dr. Jessica Müller-Stewens investigated games as a special form of innovation presentation. The young researcher sought to determine the extent to which games as a form of innovation presentation promote innovation adoption and, if so, why this is the case.

For her contribution, which was published in 2017 in the highly renowned scientific journal “Journal of Marketing”, Dr. Jessica Müller-Stewens receives the Rigour & Relevance Research Award 2018.
